TRANSITIONS

DESIGN MUSEUM LONDON, DESIGNERS IN RESIDENCE 2017

TRANSITIONS is a series of explorations, representing natural landscapes and referencing recurring cycles found in nature. These include the rise and fall of water levels, the refraction and dispersion of light, as well as the melt and freeze cycles. The stability of these cycles are unpredictable and different conditions can transform the balance and create spontaneous fluctuations within the work.

Through the use of projectors, optic lenses and light, the objects extend beyond themselves, creating installations that transform the environments they are in. The residency has been an exploration between the relationship of light, liquid optics and spontaneous fluctuations in the materials.  Each experiment is further implemented as Arctic I, Spectrum I, and Spectrum II.

In Spectrum I, the heat from the light melts the hot ice, making the crystal transparent. The light then hits the optical prism, projecting a rainbow to its surroundings. When the cycle is complete, the hot ice freezes over, creating a frosted appearance and the rainbow disappears. In Spectrum II, using only water, a water prism is created, in which the heat of the light creates condensation and droplets of water. These droplets, in turn, fall back into the water and distort the rainbow projected on to the floor; creating blurred boundaries and a rippling pattern. Through the use of projections, optic lenses and light, the objects extend beyond themselves, creating installations that transform the environments they are in.

The series has been developed as part of the "Designers in Residence" program at the Design Museum in response to the theme 'Support'.
